Preparing to learn online
Tips to transition from in-class to remote learning
Consider these tips to transition from in-class learning to remote learning:
- Remember your instructor is here to support you – we’re all in this together.
- This is a transitioning period and adjustment for everyone; please be flexible.
- Online learning can be a new and exciting experience, embrace the opportunity to develop new skills.
- Make sure to check in with your course regularly, as updates will happen (announcements, course messages, emails, etc.).
- Stay organized and find a system that works best for you. Be mindful of deadlines and ensure you have sufficient time to complete your course work.
- Be sure to review your course outline and critical path in your course site(s), as it may be updated throughout the rest of the semester.
- Review this article on the student portal about virtual classroom etiquette.

Georgian’s own student advisors have created 21 tips to help you succeed, especially if you’re new to college or haven’t taken an online course.
Learning to Learn Online is a resource created by students for students, to help ease the shift from traditional classrooms to online environments.
Studyonline.ca, by Contact North, recommends 12 steps to get ready to learn online, including how to set up your work space.

How to log in to Blackboard
- Blackboard is Georgian College’s primary Learning Management System (LMS) and allows us to transform the traditional classroom into the digital realm.
- To access your Blackboard course site, you are required to log in to gc.blackboard.com.
- Prepare your computer and ensure your browser is compatible with Blackboard.

About WebEx
A WebEx meeting is an online meeting that allows you to virtually meet with other people, without leaving your home or office.
WebEx meetings require a computer with Internet access and a separate phone line. By logging into the meeting over the internet, you will be able to see the presenter’s computer screen. By calling into the conference phone number, you will be able to hear the presenter and other participants.
**The first time you use WebEx, please allow yourself approximately five minutes to log in and get set up. Your computer will need time to automatically download the free WebEx plugin that will allow you to join the meeting.

About LinkedIn Learning
LinkedIn Learning is a website dedicated to online learning by providing access to thousands of online video tutorials created by industry experts.
To access the LinkedInLearning platform, follow the steps below:
- Visit the LinkedIn Learning website.
- In the top right corner, click on Sign in.
- Click on Sign in with your organization account.
- On the next page, enter “georgiancollege.ca” only and choose Continue.
- You will be redirected to Georgian’s Central Authentication System. Enter your username and password (the same login credentials you use to log into Blackboard or the student portal).

Georgian Learning Guarantee
At Georgian, we guarantee a learning experience of exceptional quality, where you’ll achieve your learning outcomes whether you’re studying remotely, in-person or a combination of both. We’ll support you every step of the way, whether you need career advice, tutoring, personal and academic counselling, technical help, financial assistance, and so much more.
We want you to succeed. Rest assured we’ve got your back, so much so, if you choose to withdraw from your program before June 18, 2021, we’ll apply your tuition fees to the first semester when you return in September 2021, January 2022 or May 2022. You choose the program. All you have to do is reapply and be accepted. For returning students, the same applies. We’ll apply your tuition fees for your next semester when you return in 2021 or January or May 2022. That’s our Georgian Learning Guarantee.
Eligibility – Registered summer full-time and part-time credit students in Georgian only programs; where program is available; tuition fees only; student is responsible for ancillary fees. Ontario Learn and all partner programs, such as but not limited to, Lakehead-Georgian and collaborative nursing are ineligible. Georgian students on co-op, placements or clinical placements during summer semester are also ineligible.
Students must pay their fees in full before they’re eligible to apply. The Georgian Learning Guarantee can only be accessed once in an academic year (e.g. fall 2020, winter 2021 or summer 2021).
