My fellow graduates,
June is an important month on our calendars, and I wish to begin this month’s newsletter by acknowledging two important dates:
Pride Month, a time dedicated to the uplifting of 2SLGBTQIA+ voices, a celebration of 2SLGBTQIA+ culture and the support of 2SLGBTQIA+ rights.
National Indigenous History Month, where we honour the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in Canada. It is a time for learning about, appreciating and celebrating the contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people.
National Indigenous History Month is especially poignant this year, following the discovery of undocumented remains of 215 Indigenous children at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C. Our hearts are with the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc and all communities affected, residential school survivors, and Indigenous Peoples everywhere. As a college and alumni community, we grieve deeply as we reflect on what this tragic discovery means to us individually, collectively and as a nation. This is a time to share with each other, to listen and to offer support.
Our alumni relations team will be sitting down with Georgian graduate, and Award winning Mi’kmaq-Canadian actress and media personality Nadia George (class of 2009) on June 21, to speak about Indigenous Peoples Day, and you are invited to register and attend this virtual event.
June is also convocation season at Georgian, and we wish to acknowledge the nearly 4,000 students that will be graduating this month, and joining our proud alumni family of nearly 90,000 graduates around the world. These students have worked through tremendous adversity to reach this milestone, and our council commends the dedication and support of the college’s staff and faculty for their efforts.
