A holder of an SVOP certificate can operate certain small commercial vessels. This course has been tailored to meet the training needs of the small vessel master. Topics include stability, collision regulations, chartwork and pilotage, shipboard safety, pollution prevention, meteorology, the Canadian buoyage system, radar, and the use of marine charts to execute a voyage. Prerequisites: Minimum 18 years of age.

Please note: Although we are not offering the SDV-BS (MED A3) online currently, we will be offering the SVOP course online effective the end of June 2021 (pending approval from TCMSS). We are teaching in-person courses starting May 25, 2021 at the Owen Sound Campus. Please check course code MARI 0079 for upcoming in-person course dates.

Small Vessel Operator's require MED A3 and SVOP to operate their vessel, The Restricted Operator Certificate - Marine certificate is required for mariners operating a VHF-equipped vessel in Near Coastal 2 and Sheltered waters

** One crew member on the small commercial vessel is required to hold a valid marine first-aid certificate.

If sailing more than two nautical miles from shore, MED A3 (or equivalent) is a prerequisite.
