Listening to her inner voice

Living close to Georgian, Sandy has always been drawn to the college; it’s felt like a place where she belongs. After being out of school for so long and having kids, she took the brave step to pursue her diploma – one she’s incredibly proud of.

I instantly felt welcome and supported by my professors and peers who helped me navigate all the systems and figure out life as a student. Up until I decided to come to Georgian, I had many reasons to believe I was incapable of achieving a diploma – let alone going on to university and being a valedictorian. I had lived a life riddled with addictions, pain, loss and fear. Yet my inner voice kept telling me I was worthy, and I was capable. It took a lot of work for me to listen to that voice and the endless support of my wonderful husband, but I did it. I earned three credentials and I’m not done yet! – Sandy

Changemaker and advocate

As if she were busy enough being a mom and student, Sandy also has a full-time role as an Assistant Manager at the Canadian Red Cross and is currently Chair of the Board of Directors for Dress for Success Orillia and Barrie.

She’s constantly looking for ways to be of service to others. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sandy secured funding to support migrant workers in Simcoe County. She and her team helped more than 1,500 people with everything from delivering food during quarantines to sharing resources and holding donation drives.

I’m passionate about learning and also finding ways to connect with my community and the people living in it. I give back to causes close to my heart and as someone who once relied on the services our local non-profits provide. I also want to set an example for my kids so they know what’s possible and they know they can achieve anything they set their mind to. – Sandy

We can’t wait to see what Sandy gets up to next!
