Top good news stories of 2021

Despite spending most of the year in a global pandemic, a lot of good happened at Georgian in 2021. Here are some of our favourites.

Feb. 4 – Is it a plane? Is it a bird? No, it’s #AirGrizzly, the drone dropping off an acceptance offer to the doorstep of three very surprised Georgian College applicants. We captured #AirGrizzly’s travel adventures to all three applicants on video!

New program to create huge increase in PSW training

Feb. 24 – The new accelerated training program for personal support workers (PSWs) announced today by the provincial government will produce a huge increase in PSW training at Ontario’s colleges – including Georgian College.

March 23 – Those looking to gain skills for entry into the construction trades can start building an in-demand career with Georgian College free pre-apprenticeship programs at the Muskoka Campus.

May 17 – From removing and examining bones from human bodies, to resuscitating sick babies, to dissecting animals, Georgian College is pushing the limits on its commitment to hands-on experiential student learning through virtual reality (VR) technology.

Georgian alumni add $1.4 B to regional economy

May 18 – According to a recent economic impact study by Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI), Georgian College campuses contribute $1.7 billion in income to the Georgian catchment area economy, approximately 5.3 per cent of the total gross regional product.

Georgian takes steps to be more inclusive of trans community

Sept. 9 – Georgian has had accessible, single-stall, gender-inclusive washrooms for about five years. It now also invites trans and gender non-conforming students to use the washrooms most appropriate for them.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: Take part in these events

Sept. 20 – Sept. 30 is the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It’s a day to reflect on and commemorate the legacy of residential schools. With support from Indigenous Services, we have several events planned leading up to Sept. 30.

Ontario expanding choices for prospective nursing students: Georgian College launches independent degree

Oct. 7 – The Ontario government is providing a new pathway for nursing education with the launch of Georgian College’s new stand-alone four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

Georgian offering free menstrual products at all campuses

Nov. 15 – Georgian installed free menstrual product dispensers in washrooms across all seven college campuses, so that no one has to miss school because of their period. Students can now use these dispensers to access free pads and tampons.

Georgian signs United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Accord

Dec. 14 – Georgian College is officially joining the global movement of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by signing the SDG Accord for educational institutions.
