14 ways to boost your resumé before you graduate

You’re well on your way to earning your credential at Georgian. But what can you do to stand out to potential employers?

Here are a few hacks:

  • Participate in as many hands-on learning opportunities as you can – from co-ops and internships, to field trips and study abroad experiences.
  • Get involved. There are tons of clubs and leadership opportunities at Georgian. The Georgian College Students’ Association is a great place to start.
  • Build your co-curricular record. It’s official recognition of your participation in activities outside the classroom.
  • Volunteer on campus or in the community.
  • Get to know your professors. They’re connected to your industry and make great references and mentors.
  • Venture outside your comfort zone. Say, “Yes” to new experiences and opportunities.
  • Launch or join a change project! Georgian is the first and only changemaker college in Canada.
  • Conduct research with industry partners. Check out the Centre for Applied Research and Innovation.
  • Start a business or social enterprise with support from the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre.
  • Create and maintain your LinkedIn profile. Make sure you have a professional photo, catchy headline and fill out as many sections as you can.
  • Scrub your social media accounts. Delete anything you might not want employers to see and be mindful of what you post moving forward.

  • If your goal is a technical career, add a project work section to your resumé until you have related technical work experience. Include significant projects you’ve done or been part of and briefly describe what software, equipment and skills you used.
