Cut the Crap! Cut-a-thon takes place April 16

Georgian Hairstyling students and professors are using their styling skills and entrepreneurial mindsets to raise awareness and money for mental health.

On April 16, they will host the second annual Cut the Crap! Cut-a-thon fundraiser in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association – Simcoe County.

Professor Rena Lang started the event last year because of a cause near and dear to her.

In 2017, her best friend’s son overdosed accidentally after years of battling an addiction; he was 24 when he died. Lang says her friend has struggled with this tragic incident and is having a hard time moving forward. She wanted to do something to help keep the memory of her friend’s son alive.

“As an instructor at Georgian, I meet many people who struggle with mental health issues. I thought if this event can create awareness to help even one person, then it will be worth it,” said Lang.

In their Entrepreneurial Skills course, students developed the event concept and made an event logo and marketing plan.

On April 16 between 3 and 9 p.m., the students will offer a cut and blow dry for $15, or a wash and blow dry for $10. There will also be a silent auction.

The event takes place in the Georgian Hair Studio, located in room A109 at the Barrie Campus. Review the campus map.

The Georgian Hair Studio is a creative hub on the Barrie Campus. Inside, professor Rena Lang teaches students the variety of hairstyling services they’ll be expected to perform in the salons they work at or own in the future.

The one-year Hairstyling program focuses on hands-on training in hair cutting, styling and design, as well as colouring and lightening, chemical texturizing, permanent wave, and hair additions.
