People of Georgian: Manager leads innovative projects to support students

What’s your story?

The Georgian community is full of unique, inspiring perspectives —and we’re sharing them as part of an ongoing series.

People of Georgian: Meet Susan Hosein

I started off at Georgian as a project analyst, and I’ve had various positions in the Registrar’s Office.

Now, I am a senior manager with a focus on digital innovation and process improvement. I’ve been leading many of the digital innovation projects at the college.

Supporting the Georgian experience from behind the scenes

I had been on the new admissions portal project for quite a while, where I was helping to lead the project more from a functional standpoint. Meaning, in the back end of the portal, we were doing a ton of testing to support the front of the portal, which I think is just so beautiful.

One of the things we want to do is make the experience of coming into the college, applying, doing credit transfers, and everything else along the way, a nice-looking system.

Our next digital project to work on is our registration system. It’s a 2003 build and it’s a 2003 look, so we’re hoping to transform that experience for students in a positive way.

Project would help students receive grades faster

We’re also looking at leveraging some of the technology that we’ve been bringing into the college, like Service Now, with a robotic process automation project.

An example of when that would be helpful is when faculty submit changes in grades for an entire class. An individual instructor with many students can take quite some time to input this information, plus there is a process we go through afterward before posting.

But a robotic process automation would key that information into Banner in less time, so students wouldn’t be waiting as long for their grades so they can register for the next term.

Getting credit for innovative work

Even some of our older initiatives are still getting attention, such as MyCreds, which is a digital portfolio for certifications, transcripts, and so on, that has shortened the time it takes to get a document from four to six weeks to just minutes. We also built a form to go with MyCreds, so students can update their address as part of the process.

We implemented MyCreds a couple of years ago, but we’ve had three schools in the last few months reach out to learn more about it.

I’m starting to see how far ahead we are in some things as a college. It’s really nice to get validation and feedback.

Our projects are a combination of trying to figure out how we help students from all sides, but I prefer to do the work behind the scenes.

No name tag – just put it out there.
