Georgian College researchers recognized by CICan

Researchers at Georgian College and Bow Valley College are the first recipients of Colleges and Institutes Canada’s (CICan) brand new Research on Colleges and Institutes Awards. These awards recognize achievements in research that have significantly advanced knowledge of the Canadian college and institute system.

The awards were divided in two categories. Researchers at Georgian College were recognized for best research related to teaching, learning and student success and those from Bow Valley College received a nod for best research of a system or institutional nature.

Dr. Jacqueline Limoges and Kim Jagos from Georgian’s Practical Nursing program were recognized for their work which aims to improve nursing education by evaluating how that education influences the way registered nurses and registered practical nurses interact and work together. Their study has shown how joint education can help resolve the tensions and disjunctures between the two groups and be used to teach collaborative decision-making.

Georgian President and CEO MaryLynn West-Moynes offered her congratulations.

“The research that these two faculty members have accomplished can bring significant benefit to nursing students, nursing professionals and patients alike. Dr. Limoges’ and Ms. Jagos’ research has far-reaching implications for the education and health care sectors, and the research findings have the potential to improve the quality of patient care. I am very proud to have educators of their stature as faculty in our nursing programs,” she said.

The award recipients presented their research during a CICan pre-conference symposium on May 24 in Winnipeg. Their research will also be showcased on a new section of the CICan website on research projects being undertaken about the college and institute system.

Colleges and Institutes Canada is the national and international voice of Canada’s publicly supported colleges, institutes and polytechnics. We work with industry and social sectors to train 1.5 million learners of all ages and backgrounds at campuses serving over 3,000 urban, rural and remote communities in Canada. The Association operates in 29 countries via 12 offices around the world.

Denise Amyot, President and CEO, Colleges and Institutes Canada said researchers at both Georgian and Bow Valley are performing important work.

The exceptional quality of these research projects and the impact of their findings have greatly contributed to our understanding of the nature and contribution of colleges and institutes in Canada,” Amyot said.
