Georgian celebrates social innovation in Simcoe County with Move it Forward event

Georgian College, in collaboration with the Ontario Social Service Workers Association (OSSWA), recently hosted Move it Forward, a free, professional development experience at the Orillia Campus.

The event gave members of local community organizations an opportunity to meet and also acknowledge the socially innovative work being done in Simcoe County. It was also intended as a thank you for the many community partners who have supported Georgian College students through field placements and Community Projects Initiatives.

“This is a day to celebrate what is taking place in Simcoe County already and to network and collaborate on future projects that will strengthen the not-for-profit sector in our communities,” said Suzanne Addison-Toor, manager of the Centre for Social Innovation at Georgian College.

Morning session speakers focused on organizational sustainability. Speakers included Cathy Lang, primary consultant with C. Lang Consulting, Jonathon Corbiere, creative director/founder of Thought Café, and Marc Hill, president and CEO of Digital Giants.

Afternoon panelists included Kevin Gangloff, director of youth opportunities, Orillia Youth Centre, James Thomson, vice president of strategic initiatives with New Path Foundation, and Irfan Toor, principal of Twin Lakes Secondary School.

The event was sponsored by Georgian College’s Centre for Social Innovation, Ontario Social Service Workers Association, using RECODE grant funding from the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation.
