Message from the Chair

Greetings fellow alumni,

As a proud alumnus of Georgian College, I could not be prouder of our college’s accomplishments. With this being my last message as Chair of the Alumni Association Executive Council, I wanted to express my deep gratitude to all of our alumni for giving me this honour to serve, advocate and grow our association.

Each year, as we welcome new students to Georgian, we are reminded of the great legacy left behind by our wonderful alumni. As your Council Chair, it has been my goal to work with our alma mater and the full Alumni Council to raise public awareness of the great things our alumni are doing each and every day. As a council, we have worked hard to grow our membership, assist with development of fundraising opportunities, grow the connections between current and future alumni and to promote exciting activities and events for alumni and their families.

To ensure our family of more than 82,000 alumni is strong, we introduced the exclusive Georgian Alumni Network this past year, which helped to break down barriers and connect our global network in a single space. This space is yours, and I encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities it provides.

I complete my term as Chair during a challenging period for so many. COVID-19 has affected us all in some way, but I’m inspired and uplifted by the many stories that continue to appear across our network. Our alumni who work as essential workers have ensured our communities remain strong through this period of uncertainty, and many of our alumni-turned-entrepreneurs have adapted their businesses to make necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) to support essential businesses and service providers. We are a family and I think I speak for us all when I extend to you a heartfelt thank you.

In looking to the future, your Alumni Association Executive Council approved the new slate of council members this past Thursday, which will be led by our new Chair, Arjun Batra, class of 2007. It is a strong group of alumni who I truly believe reflect the wonderful diversity in our membership and I can’t wait to see the great things to come. I would also be remiss if I did not thank three additional council members who complete their final terms this year: Jeremy Wyant, Owein Chivers and Jake Vella.

And before I close this message, I want to acknowledge two important movements happening this month. Firstly, June is pride month and while the Stonewall riots may have occurred in 1969, the fight for equality continues. As allies and friends, we stand with our LGBT community. Secondly, to our communities of colour. Please know that your alumni association stands in solidarity with you. We support the fight against anti-Black racism and acknowledge that racism, oppression and intolerance exists in our communities. We are committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for our members, and to ensuring that your voices are represented and heard.

On behalf of myself, my partner Andrea who is also a proud Georgian alumna, and our twins who arrived this past year – we wish you happiness, good health and much success in the days ahead.
