How to decorate for the holidays and show your Georgian pride

No matter how you celebrate the winter holiday season, showcasing your personal style through decorations is key, says Mary Dobson, a Design and Visual Arts Professor at Georgian.

“If you put them together, it means they go together. That’s my rule,” she says, with a laugh.

Mary was a guest during a recent Talk to Georgian live chat on Instagram where she shared plenty of tips on how to decorate for the holidays. Afterward, Kailey Hawkins, a Student Recruitment Specialist and musician, performed holiday songs and shared a touching tribute with a holiday family heirloom.

You don’t want it to ‘ugly out’ before it wears out

Decorating doesn’t have to be expensive, Mary says, noting people can mix brand-new items with vintage and dollar-store finds.

“Don’t put your money into something you don’t know you’ll love forever,” she says. “You don’t want it to ‘ugly out’ before it wears out.”

There are also so many ways to decorate, no matter if you’re a minimalist, maximalist, or just want to show off your school spirit using Georgian’s blue and green colours.

“You don’t need to do traditional colours. I, personally, have always been a huge fan of blue and green together, so I was meant to be here at Georgian,” she says.

A simple way to be festive and show your Georgian pride is by trimming some small boughs off a shrub and adding blue ribbon and other blue accents.

“It’s really a pretty easy thing to do to take any colour you like and make that your holiday colour.”
