Five reasons to join adult upgrading at Georgian
July 16, 2025
Need to upgrade your skills for college, an apprenticeship, or a job? Whether you’re missing high school credits or just want to strengthen your academic foundation, Georgian’s Academic and Career Preparation (ACP) program gives you a free, flexible path forward.

Funded by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario for citizens and permanent residents 18 or older, ACP helps you earn recognized credentials, meet entry requirements and build confidence with the flexibility to accommodate the realities of daily life. No matter where you are in your journey, upgrading your education could be the key to unlocking new possibilities.
Why you should get started with academic upgrading
1. Meet entry requirements for college or apprenticeship
Need specific courses to qualify for a college program or skilled trade? Our Academic and Career Entrance(ACE) courses (including communications, math, biology, chemistry and physics) fulfill admission requirements for Ontario colleges and apprenticeships. If you’re aiming for a degree program at Georgian College, we also offer Degree Entrance courses (English, data management, biology and chemistry).
2. Earn a recognized credential without returning to high school
You don’t need to go back to high school; you can upgrade for college, at college. Completing four ACE courses qualifies you for an Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) Certificate, which all Ontario colleges and many employers accept as equivalent to a high school diploma.
3. Build confidence and skills for work and school
Returning to learning as an adult can feel intimidating, but our supportive environment helps you succeed. You’ll gain confidence in your abilities—whether for a job, college, or everyday life! Beyond academics, we offer:
- Computers class (using Windows, Microsoft Office, email and more).
- Keys to Success (study skills, time management).
- Intro to 21st Century Skills (digital literacy, workplace essentials).
- Ramp Up workshops (preparing for success in your next college program).
4. Improve your job prospects
Many careers require at least a high school-level education. Employers value lifelong learners—show them you’re committed to growth! Upgrading can help you:
- Qualify for better-paying jobs.
- Prepare for employment tests like the Communications Placement Assessment (CPA).
- Develop computer and office skills (with courses like Intro to Office Admin).
5. It’s free and flexible for Ontario residents
Worried about cost or scheduling? Good news: ACP is tuition-free for Ontario residents 18 and older, with classes at all Georgian College campuses (in addition to Wasaga Beach and Newmarket). Courses are delivered in a variety of ways, with daytime and evening options, allowing you to find a balance between school, work and life.

Take your next step today
Whether you need one course or a full certificate, ACP is designed for adults like you. We have a continuous intake model for many of our courses, so you can start any time of the year, even in the middle of the semester.
