Students create Iron Man suit to protect firefighters on the job
March 20, 2018
Georgian students Rodolfo Horta (Business – Entrepreneurship) and Brodie Pochadt (Mechanical Engineering Technology) created an innovative prototype that could spark a change to current firefighting practices.
They developed an exoskeleton that will provide protection and strength for firefighters in the firefighting and mining industry.
The prototype, made possible through Georgian’s friendship with Barrie Welding and Machine, includes a torso and functioning arm that can lift 250 pounds.
Horta and Pochadt have a fully baked business plan and have competed in startup weekends, hackathons and pitch competitions hosted by the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre.
Further refinements to the prototype are in process as the duo, known as Vulkan Heavy Industries, determines how to bring it fully to market.
