Pharmacy Technician students collaborate with community partners on public health initiative

Georgian students educated the community about the importance of safe medication storage and disposal at two prescription drop-off events held this spring.
They partnered with the Simcoe Musoka District Health Unit, South Simcoe Police and Barrie Police.
“This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to give back to the community,” says Toni Cano, co-ordinator of the Pharmacy Technician program. “We hope the success of these events will inspire them to continue to drive positive social change within their own communities as they graduate and start their pathway to becoming regulated pharmacy technicians.”
At the Barrie event alone, 190+ different medications were returned during the four-hour drop-off period, including regular prescription medications, narcotics, over the counter medications and even veterinary prescribed medications.
Included in those numbers – more than 4,700 pills.
