DSW students develop devices to support independence and inclusion

Students in the Developmental Service Worker (DSW) program got the opportunity to try their hand at creating devices to help those with disabilities achieve greater independence and community inclusion.

As a follow up to a project where they were asked to research a disability label/diagnosis of their choosing, students were then tasked with developing a low-cost, low-tech device that would assist individuals with accessing natural supports and opportunities for full community participation. In creating the device it was essential that they took into account the causes, signs, symptoms, behavioural characteristics and support needs commonly seen in individuals with the developmental disability that they selected.

Check out the video to see some of the innovative devices the DSW students were able to create on a low budget.
