Cabinetmaking students show their best work at upcoming exhibit

The pieces displayed in Georgian College’s tenth annual Student Cabinetmaking Exhibit are as unique as the students themselves.

The Cabinetmaking Techniques students will display their best work starting Tuesday, July 29 in the Campus Gallery at the Barrie Campus. The grand opening takes place between 7 and 9 p.m.; the exhibit continues Wednesday, July 30 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Matthew Rees is planning to display his red oak bookcase. After working for years in a factory, he says enrolling in the Cabinetmaking Techniques certificate has been life changing.

“When I started the program, I had minimal skills,” he says. “My skillset has advanced greatly, and after just one year in the program, I can confidently say I can build anything now.”

Matthew says one of the key things he’s learned in the program is to lean into the expertise of his instructors.

“I credit my professor, Lynn MacKinlay, with helping me build my skillset and focusing in on a specialty area,” adds Matthew. “I learned how to refine my skills on the machines and in the drafting process. I also learned how to solve problems creatively; thanks to the one-on-one support I received.”

After graduation, Matthew plans to pursue an apprenticeship, work toward earning his Red Seal certificate in cabinetmaking, and then specialize in spray finishing.

“I’m very passionate about furniture making and kitchen design and have a deep love for woodworking,” he says. “Being creative in my work is an absolute dream come true.”

Matthew will be on hand at the exhibit to discuss his work, some of which will be for sale. A number of faculty and students will also be in attendance.

“The exhibit is a highlight of the program for me,” says Prof. Lynn MacKinlay. “It’s very gratifying to watch students hone their craft throughout the year and be able to display their work for everyone to see.”

The exhibit is also an opportunity for visitors to check out the program for anyone interested in building their own skilled trades career.
