Dealing with unruly bangs? Step away from those scissors. Why not try a few of these at-home hair remedies recommended by Rena Lang, Co-ordinator, Georgian’s Hairstyling program. These will help you feel and look good.
If you’re trying to give your hair a little break from shampooing but you’ve run out of dry shampoo, here’s a quick fix: Use baby powder (the kind without corn starch). Apply the baby powder at the root of your hair. This will take the moisture out of your hair (oil), give you volume and leave your hair feeling cleaner.

What about those roots? No problem. If you’re a dark brunette, use your mascara to cover any visible grey hair. Application around the hairline and your part will take those nasty greys away and leave you feeling younger.

If you’re a blonde or have light brown hair, you can use a natural palette of eye shadow or brow filler to deal with your roots. Use a firm eye shadow brush or even a firm craft paint brush to apply the powder to the re-growth area that shows . . . and bam, no more grey!

Tired of your flat hair? Try braiding your hair after your shower and leave the braid in until your hair is dry. Once you take the braid out . . . beautiful waves.

Don’t cut those bangs – they can take forever to grow out. If you’re finding that your bangs are a little long, try putting a little hair spray on the root of the bang area. It will lift the bangs a little, making them appear a little shorter. By the way, hairspray is also great for stains. If you drop something on your clothes, spray hairspray directly on the stain and let it dry. When you wash the article of clothing the stain usually comes out. The hairspray doesn’t allow it to settle on the fabric.
Here’s a home remedy for dry hair. If your hair is feeling a little dry and you’ve run out of your favourite hair mask, try this the next time you’re in the shower:
- Shampoo your hair.
- Take most of the moisture out using a towel.
- Apply your regular conditioner. Now that you’ve taken the water out of your hair you’re not diluting your conditioner and will find your conditioner to be far more effective.
- Leave the conditioner in for five to 20 minutes and rinse as normal.
