People of Georgian: Top 5 posts that inspired you in 2020
Dec. 23, 2020
What’s your story?
As we enter a new year, we’re looking back at the many incredible stories our students, alumni, staff and faculty have shared with us through our People of Georgian series, and we can’t wait to share more.
Our Georgian College community is full of unique, inspiring perspectives, and each of the features we’ve published so far is no exception.
From immigrating to Canada, to surviving a ferry crash, to finding peace in the outdoors, to seeing the lighter side of alopecia, our Georgian family has shared stories of perseverance, passion, humour, love, hard work, and resilience.
Since we launched the series in May, here’s a look back at five of the most popular People of Georgian posts.
People of Georgian: Meet Cindy Mutchler
Perhaps not surprisingly, the most-read People of Georgian post of 2020 was about Cindy Mutchler, Georgian’s Registrar, who survived a harrowing, near-death ferry crash in the Philippines.
“I fell off into the ocean and got swept with the current quite a way outside of the search zone. I was scared I was bleeding because I was worried about sharks.”

People of Georgian: Meet Ishaan Sachdeva
This international student from India has reconnected with his home cooking while studying in Canada.
“While talking with my grandmother recently, I showed her that I learned how to make bread rolls and that I’m re-living the memories we shared through the food she used to cook for me. This brought a huge smile to her face.”
Psst, did you know Ishaan also co-hosts The GROWL student vlog? Check it out.
People of Georgian: Meet Nicole Norris
Through an inspiring story, the manager of Georgian’s Centre for Changemaking and Social Innovation shares how she leaned into embracing her authentic self.
“I’ve always felt out of step with who I was and what I was trying to do. I’ve spent about 20 years fumbling through and deprogramming what I was always told to do, and trying to follow my heart.
“When I came to Georgian, it was the start of a journey where I could finally put a stake in the ground and say, ‘How do I want to contribute to the world?’”

People of Georgian: Meet Jose Fernandez
Canada has become a ‘second home’ for this Georgian international student from Mexico.
“I believe that my passion for nature and travelling led me here to this beautiful country. I love the feeling here of freedom, happiness and opportunity.”
People of Georgian: Meet David Coward
Between his funky Dr. Martens and brightly-coloured bowties, Georgian’s Vice-President of Human Resources is certainly memorable. David humorously shared with us his insights into fashion, hair loss and more.
“I tell young people we’re actually lucky, those of us with alopecia, because we’re actually Homo sapiens 2.0. We actually evolved beyond the hairy ape people that surround us.”
