People of Georgian top 5 of 2025: 5 journey’s, one community

People of Georgian highlights the individuals who help shape life at Georgian College. Sometimes that’s a student navigating change. Sometimes it’s a faculty member sharing hard-earned experience. Other times, it’s a leader or staff member helping others find their way.

As we look back on 2025, these five stories stood out for how personal they are and how clearly they reflect the Georgian community.

1. Working at Owen Sound Campus personal for hometown leader

Dr. Dave Shorey, executive director of Georgian’s Owen Sound Campus, reflects on what it means to return to Grey-Bruce and work in a place that feels deeply personal. Having grown up in the region, his leadership is shaped by local connections and a strong sense of responsibility to the community. The story also highlights the role the Owen Sound Campus plays in expanding access to education, including apprenticeship training.

2. Instructor inspires next generation of paramedics

Shared during Paramedic Services Week, this story features Paul Shimoda, a part-time clinical instructor in Georgian’s paramedic programs and a two-time alumnus. Drawing on his experience in the field, Paul helps students prepare for the realities of paramedicine, from hospital settings to high-pressure decision-making.

3. Riding a ‘roller coaster from hell’ leads to self-discovery and happiness

In this candid and personal story, Jenni Thompson, Georgian’s media relations officer, reflects on a period of trauma and major life disruption. Through therapy, support and time, she began rebuilding her sense of self and finding happiness again. .

4. People of Georgian: The Sunset Piper

Michael Smith is a Professor in the Honours Bachelor of Science – Nursing program. He is also known as ‘The Sunset Piper’.

Michael Smith, a nursing professor at Georgian, is also known in his community as the Sunset Piper. For more than two decades, he has played the bagpipes at sunset along the shores of Lake Huron. His story weaves together music, family and teaching, showing how passion and routine have shaped both his personal life and his work at Georgian’s Owen Sound Campus.

5. Flying forward: Geoff Wall helps military-connected students take off

Geoff Wall, Georgian’s military connected co-ordinator, brings a lifetime of experience in aviation and military service to his role supporting learners. After a long career that included time with Air Canada, Geoff joined Georgian in 2025 to help military-connected students transition into postsecondary education. His work focuses on guidance, understanding and helping students navigate their next chapter.
