Top good news stories of 2022

As 2022 comes to an end, here’s a look back at some of our favourite good news stories from the year.

Georgian employees receive Minister of Colleges and Universities’ Award of Excellence

Feb. 3 – Three Georgian College employees received a Minister of Colleges and Universities’ Award of Excellence in the category of Future Proofing Students for their work using virtual reality (VR) technology to teach and preserve the Anishnaabemowin language.

Georgian officially opens the Magna Mechatronics Lab at the Barrie Campus

June 24 – Georgian College and Magna International Inc. officially opened the Magna Mechatronics Lab at the Barrie Campus. The event celebrated Magna’s significant investment in Georgian and our students, showed off the new lab space.

Indigenous artwork unveiled at the Muskoka, Orangeville and South Georgian Bay campuses

July 26 – Georgian recently unveiled Indigenous artwork by alumna Chantelle Marchand at the Muskoka, Orangeville and John Di Poce South Georgian Bay campuses. Marchand, whose spirit name is Anangokaa, studied Fine Arts at Georgian and graduated in 2020.

Georgian policing students make up first all-female class of auxiliary officers

Aug. 2 – Spring is a time of rebirth, new beginnings and fresh starts. For nine Georgian students, it was also a chance to make history as the first all-female class to be welcomed as auxiliary officers with the South Simcoe Police Service.

Georgian announces new designation as a military-connected college

Sept. 21 – As a military-connected college, Georgian will offer an exceptional education, coupled with scholarships and academic, social and mental health supports to help those currently serving, veterans and their family members thrive and succeed as they transition from military to civilian life.

Georgian opens ultra-modern Nursing and Wellness wing at Owen Sound Campus

Sept. 22 – Georgian officially opened the newly transformed Nursing and Wellness Wing at the Owen Sound Campus on Sept. 22. The wing will have an extraordinary impact on community health and the staffing of health-care facilities throughout the region.

Kevin Weaver officially installed as Georgian’s 6th President and CEO

Oct. 6 – At a special ceremony hosted by the Board of Governors, Kevin Weaver was installed as Georgian’s 6th President and CEO on Oct. 5. Students, current and past board members, employees, alumni, donors, community and industry partners gathered to celebrate.

Five Georgian community members earn Newcomer Recognition Awards

Nov. 10 – Georgian College is proud of its diverse community and the incredible accomplishments of students, employees and alumni. Five members of the Georgian community were recently honoured with 2022 Simcoe County Newcomer Recognition Awards at the 10th annual event.

Georgian’s first in-person Open House in more than two years draws record-setting crowd

Nov. 15 – Georgian’s first in-person Open House since fall 2019 was a huge success with more than 2,300 guests coming out Saturday, Nov. 12 to learn about college programs and services. This represents a 55 per cent increase from the last in-person Open House.

Georgian announces new Indigenization strategy

Nov. 30 – Georgian College has launched a new Indigenization strategy representing a renewed energy to lead the college forward on the important journey of Truth and Reconciliation. Through the new plan, the college is committed to continuing to deepen and enhance this work across the entire Georgian community.
