Students develop their counselling skills in new labs

Child and Youth Care students practise counselling skills in a new simulation lab, while other students watch and provide feedback.
First-year Child and Youth Care students can now practise basic and in-the-moment counselling skills in new interactive counselling labs at the Orillia Campus.
In C-wing, a simulation lab has been set up like an apartment to allow students to experience the milieu of a group care or home setting. Students have already commented that the lab makes it easier for them to role play.
“It looks and feels like everyday life,” one student said.
Learners use these interactive labs to explore the theory, skills and qualities embedded in a therapeutic relationship. Relational practice and the values forming the foundation of client-centred, strengths-based support are emphasized – including respect, genuineness, empathy and empowerment.
Students practise basic counselling skills and use reflective tools and feedback to learn from and gain insight into simulated interactions with clients.
