Prof’s baseball podcast up for award
May 30, 2016
In addition to his role as professor and program co-ordinator of Georgian Business programs, Chris McBrien records a baseball podcast titled “Dear Mr. Fantasy.” His podcast has grown in popularity since he started the venture in 2012. In fact, it’s a finalist for the 2016 PodCast Awards (sports category) – up against nominees like CBS Sports!
Chris discusses fantasy baseball statistics, player analysis, projections and provides general advice. Joined each week by co-host Joe Pisapia of Sirius/XM Radio and producer Yancy Eaton, the podcast has featured industry experts and former athletes such as USA Today sports editor Steve Gardner and former MLB catcher Gregg Zaun.
“It’s an honour to be nominated and that’s not just a cliché,” says Chris. “When you consider the sheer volume of podcasts being produced today, as well as the calibre of competition in the category, it’s an achievement to be recognized alongside such incredible programs.”
The Podcast Awards recognize the best podcasters in the world by allowing listeners to nominate, and then vote for their favourite podcasts across several categories.
With interest in fantasy sports growing annually, there’s been an increased need for more information on the topic. Chris says fantasy sports now account for approximately $4 billion in annual economic impact across the sports industry.
“In addition to providing information on our topic, the key for us is to keep things fun and always involve our audience,” he says. “Baseball doesn’t have to be all stats and numbers. It can be a chance to get together with friends and have fun and a lot of laughs. The content on our show relies heavily on listener feedback, questions and comments. Podcasting can be a highly interactive medium and a chance to connect with listeners. That’s what we strive to achieve with our show.”
Voting is open to the general public May 29 to June 12 via the awards website.
