News release: Georgian College launches greenhouse ‘micro-credential’ in partnership with Rama Community Farm
Aug. 26, 2025
Barrie, Ontario – Georgian College is expanding its suite of hands-on, industry-aligned training through a new micro-credential in greenhouse operations. Micro-credentials are short, focused training programs designed to quickly equip students with specific skills that are in high demand by employers. They offer a fast and affordable way to enhance qualifications, improve job performance, boost career prospects or transition into new roles. The program includes in-person learning at the Rama Maawnjiydiwag Gtigaan (Rama Community Farm), owned and operated by the Chippewas of Rama First Nation.
“This partnership is a meaningful way to share our knowledge of Indigenous agricultural practices that are sustainable, while also creating real opportunities for people to develop skills that benefit their careers and the land.” said Kailey LeDrew, Maawnjiydiwag Gtigaan Manager
The curriculum was developed through a collaborative process led by CICan, working with numerous post-secondary institutions, businesses, and industry experts across Canada. The Georgian College program combines online coursework with hands-on experience at Rama Community Farm. The site is recognized for its focus on ecological sustainability, soil health and Indigenous agricultural practices. Participants will build foundational knowledge in areas such as plant science, integrated pest management, sustainable production systems and food safety, all while learning directly in a working greenhouse setting.
“We are very excited to be working with CICan and Rama First Nation on this innovative program. It not only opens pathways to meaningful careers in sustainable agriculture, food sustainability and food systems, but also reinforces our commitment to Indigenous partnership and community-focused learning,” said Mary Johnston, Director of Continuing Education and Corporate Training at Georgian College.
To be eligible, participants must be legally permitted to work in Canada, have a minimum of three years of work or volunteer experience, and demonstrate proficiency in English.
Registration is still open for another cohort of the program beginning in mid-September at Camphill Communities just outside of Barrie. For more information, including eligibility criteria and how to apply, visit: Georgian College Greenhouse Practices and Operational Fundamentals.
