High school students cook up a storm in culinary competition

Many students in chefs uniforms are busy cooking in a baking lab. Eighty-five students from 20 secondary schools across Central Ontario competed this week in Georgian’s annual High School Hospitality Competition at the Barrie Campus. There were 20 cooking teams, 14 baking teams and nine restaurant service teams. Cooking teams (they worked in pairs) were required to prepare a three-course meal, while baking teams prepared a variety of recipes (apple pies, banana muffins, bread rolls, éclairs and choux puffs). Restaurant service students completed tasks like setting a table, preparing mocktails and coffee service.

First place winners were:

  • Baking category: John Cabot Secondary School (Mississauga), Sharina Sotalbo and Katrina Cassar
  • Cooking category: Thistletown Collegiate (Etobicoke), Bailee Letman and Cherisse Logan
  • Restaurant service: Thistletown Collegiate, Justice Chea and Amit Marocha

Congratulations to all winners who will receive scholarships to attend Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation programs at Georgian and thanks to all participants.
