Grizzlies clinch west division with big win over Conestoga

rugby players face off - conestoga athlete tackling a Georgian athlete who is running with the ballThe Georgian Grizzlies men’s rugby team played their final regular season home game of the year when they hosted the Conestoga Condors on Sunday at J.C. Massie Field at Georgian’s Barrie Campus.

It was a big game for the Grizzlies. They knew a win would clinch the team the OCAA west division, and guarantee the team a bye to the semi-finals.

Georgian didn’t let anything faze them and put together a solid effort running away from Conestoga by a score of 99-10.

This is the Grizzlies’ fourth straight OCAA west division title. Georgian is now guaranteed to host a playoff semi-final game at home the weekend of Nov. 3-4. The exact date, time and opponent will be determined at a later date.

Donovan Jacko (Brampton) and Damon Green (Newmarket) led the way scoring three tries each for the Grizzlies.

Teammates Tennyson Brown (Alliston) and William Corcoran (Dundalk) each had two tries while Brandon Inniss (Toronto), Mark Rodman (Minesing), Jayden Wheeler (Keswick), Liam Wilson (Orillia) and Jacob Young (Barrie) each scored one try.

OCAA scoring leader Ryan Connolly (Barrie) added to his total by scoring on nine converts for 18 points.

The Grizzlies still have one game remaining on their regular season schedule, when they travel to take on the Sheridan Bruins next Saturday, Oct. 20 at noon in Oakville.

The game is the second annual Battle of the Bears rivalry game and the Grizzlies will be looking to defend the Brown Bear Trophy against the Bruins.
