Georgian’s second annual robotics competition a huge success
March 8, 2018
The competition was fierce and the battles hard-won at Georgian’s second annual FIRST Robotics POWER UP games held at the Barrie Campus over the weekend.
A total of 28 teams made up of high school students from all over Ontario had only 45 days to design, prototype, build, program and test their robots. They were judged on teamwork, engineering excellence, entrepreneurial spirit, as well as specific tasks their robots were required to complete during the competition.
In the end, one Simcoe County team took home an award. Alliston’s Banting Memorial High School won the Highest Rookie Seed Award.
The overall winning alliance was comprised of three teams: Orbit Robotics (Oakville), Ice Cubed (North Bay) and Gravenhurst High School.
“This weekend was an opportunity to host our second annual FIRST Robotics competition and to showcase the incredible talent of bright minds from across the province,” said MaryLynn West-Moynes, President and CEO of Georgian College. “These young leaders worked hard and put their robots to the test in an exciting, jam-packed competition.”
Georgian partnered with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an international not-for-profit organization, to host the competition March 3 and 4.
Georgian’s event is one of nine competitions to take place across Ontario this year. The winning teams now move on to provincial championships in April at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, where they will fight for a spot at the FRC World Championship in Detroit, Michigan.
