Georgian student named ambassador at Barrie Fair
Sept. 30, 2015
Georgian student Jacqueline Dykstra was honoured to be named Senior Ambassador at the Barrie Fair this summer. She was awarded a $1,500 scholarship, which will help greatly with her studies.
As part of her ambassador duties, Jacqueline will attend various events over the next year, such as Christmas parades, Canada Day events, Kempenfest and even a day at city hall with the mayor! She’ll also get to travel to Toronto next summer to compete as Barrie Fair’s representative in the CNE Ambassador of the Fair competition.
The Hospitality Administration – Hotel and Resort student says her interest in agriculture stems from an interest in healthy eating. “We’ve forgotten where food comes from,” she says. This was the subject of the speech she gave before the three judges who named her this year’s winner of the title.
Jacqueline came to Georgian after an unsatisfying university experience, and she’s glad she did. She says her Georgian profs are very encouraging and the hands-on experience she is acquiring is valuable. Her program choice was the right one – she loves the combination of business knowledge and hospitality skills she’s developing. She’ll put those skills to good use when she follows her dream of opening and managing a hotel for people with disabilities.
