Georgian staff and students share hidden talents to raise funds for scholarships
March 10, 2016

You never know what to expect at Georgian’s annual variety show . . . dancers, singers, comedians or maybe even the odd zombie.
More than 40 Georgian staff and students will share their hidden talents at the 24th annual Georgian’s Got Talent (or not) Benefit Concert to help raise funds for financially-challenged students. Performances will take place Thursday, March 17 and Friday, March 18 at the Georgian Theatre at the Barrie Campus.
The benefit concert, formerly known as the Gord Bastian Variety Show, will feature all sorts of acts: dance, music, and comedy.
“It’s a true variety show – you never know what to expect,” says director Elaine Murray, who has been on the organizing committee for 24 years. “We have a number of new performers this year, including Georgian’s first girl band – made up of both staff and students.”
The show is hosted by local comedian, and Georgian staffer, Andrea Murray – whose antics are always memorable.
“There’s no telling what Andrea will come up with this year,” says Murray. “She has graced the stage as everything from Miley Cyrus to a singing cow.”
Proceeds from this year’s show will fund the annual Gord Bastian Memorial Entrance Award, as well as Georgian’s financial aid bursaries.
Tickets are $15 and a dinner/show special is available for $30. Students, seniors and alumni can purchase tickets for $10. Tickets can be purchased at GeorgianCollege.ca/benefit-concert, Bear Essentials Stores at Georgian’s Barrie and Orillia campuses, or at the door.
“This year has been really special,” says director Elaine Murray. “There has been a ton of collaboration between staff and students. The cast has become one big family. Performers dedicate numerous hours of their time to bring the audience something that’s professional, engaging and often laugh-out-loud funny.”
