Two Georgian graduates, Andrew Burke (Business Administration, 2014) and Nathan Ayrheart (Architectural Technology, 2014), owners of Georgian Detailing, were the recipients of the Bell Canada Student of Excellence Award at the 2014 Barrie Business Awards on Nov. 27.
The award, given to young business entrepreneurs who are well-rounded volunteers and contributors to the community, comes with a $1,000 scholarship.
“It was awesome. I was so surprised we won because the other two finalists in the category were amazing,” said Andrew. “And I have to thank everyone at Georgian College for all the help they have given us.”
Andrew and Nathan started their car detailing business as a way to make money one summer. After seeking guidance at Georgian’s Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre, they were able to turn their idea into a viable business. Thanks to inspiring and helpful mentors, and their own drive and determination, Andrew and Nathan are about expand their operation beyond Barrie’s borders into the central Ontario region.
Angela Luciani, another Georgian graduate and current student (Jewellery and Metals, Goldsmithing and Silversmithing, 2014), was one of the other finalists in the same student category. A love of making crafts and jewellery led her to starting her own business, Eclectaccessories, an online boutique selling fine jewellery, accessories, craft work and custom designs.
“I have been told that I won’t be able to make a career out of my talents, and that I should just give up,” said Angela. “Being a finalist for this award is proof to myself and others like me that hard work and determination CAN make things happen.”
