Georgian College offers new trauma awareness skills course at Barrie Campus

Paramedic students and faculty working outsidePrepare yourself for trauma. That’s the focus of a new, part-time Georgian College course, aimed at first responders and others working in occupations where they may be exposed to trauma – or have already experienced trauma.

Georgian College is collaborating with the Simcoe Trauma Recovery Clinic to provide a Trauma Awareness Skills (TASC) course. It’s an opportunity for students and professionals in high-stress fields to take action and prepare themselves. Typical occupations include paramedics, police, security officers, nurses, firefighters, social workers, military members, counsellors and others who may experience trauma in their professional lives.

The course runs May 27 and May 28, 2017, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Barrie Campus.

The course follows a comprehensive, practical and trauma-informed curriculum that helps participants develop resiliency and emotional fitness. Participants will learn tools to equip themselves to better cope with trauma by recognizing the importance of stress reduction, self-awareness and peer support.
