Georgian College celebrates 50 years of student success with Simcoe County
Oct. 3, 2017
County of Simcoe Warden Gerry Marshall and Georgian College President and CEO MaryLynn West-Moynes together celebrated 50 years since the launch of Georgian College through a flag-raising ceremony at the County of Simcoe Administrative Centre today.
West-Moynes pointed out that the County of Simcoe and Georgian College have a long-standing partnership to make postsecondary education accessible throughout the region. Earlier this year, the county pledged $5 million to support the new Advanced Technology, Innovation and Research Centre under construction at Georgian’s Barrie Campus. County Council has previously supported the Sadlon Centre for Health, Wellness and Sciences at the Barrie Campus and the John Di Poce South Georgian Bay Campus in Collingwood.
“Thanks to the ongoing support and contributions of the county, Georgian is transforming lives, meeting the evolving needs of industry and our economy, and strengthening the communities we serve,” West-Moynes said. “Georgian has set high standards of excellence – and our students and more than 68,000 graduates have exceeded them. Their success is our success, and yours.”
“We congratulate and thank Georgian College for providing 50 years of world-class postsecondary education in our County,” said Warden Marshall. “With a significant percentage of graduates coming from or staying in Simcoe County to work and live, Georgian has had a significant social and economic impact on our communities. Our Council recognizes this important role and has committed $9 million in funding between 2009 to 2022 to support various capital projects at Georgian College campuses throughout the region.”
With 11,000 full-time students across seven campuses, Georgian College has been serving the postsecondary needs of thousands of people, helping them to reach their dreams, for the past 50 years.
