Georgian celebrates Indigenous culture at annual Pow Wow March 10

Indigenous dancers in colourful dressStaff, students and the public are invited to Georgian College’s 13th Traditional Pow Wow – Honouring the Gifts of Plants and Animals – to celebrate and learn about Indigenous culture and tradition.

The annual Pow Wow, organized by students, staff and community members, takes place in the Barrie Campus Athletic Centre on March 10.

“Attendees are encouraged to have fun, watch the dancing and drumming, and ask questions to learn more,” says Special Events Co-ordinator Eva Brown.

“The Pow Wow is a time for people to gather and celebrate life,” she adds. “It is a time to share culture, traditions and heritage through drumming, dancing and singing. There will be lots of wonderful handcrafted arts and crafts for sale so folks should come out and listen to music, browse the crafts and try some Indigenous food.”

Doors open to the public at 10:30 a.m. The spectacular Grand Entry will take place at noon and again at 7 p.m. for the evening session. The event wraps up around 9 p.m.

Admission and parking are free. Donations of non-perishable food items to the Student Food Locker (an on-campus food bank for Georgian students) are encouraged.
