Gdi-Nweninaa: Our Sound, Our Voices – Pow Wow March 8

?Thousands of people will gather at the Barrie Campus on Saturday, March 8 for the ninth Traditional Georgian College Pow Wow to celebrate and learn about Aboriginal culture and traditions.

Just 10 years after a small group of students and community members founded the Georgian College Pow Wow, it has evolved into a popular community-wide event hosted by the Indigenous Studies department.

The theme of the 2014 Pow Wow is Gdi-Nweninaa: Our Sound, Our Voices. It is a time of singing, dancing, sharing, healing and laughter – an opportunity for Aboriginal people to remember the seven generations from the past, and for the future seven generations, a proud heritage to share with others.

Join colleagues, students and members of the Aboriginal community in the gym. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. The spectacular grand entry will take place at noon. There will be a break from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and the event wraps up at 9 p.m.

For 2014, the master of ceremonies is Beedahsiga Elliott; arena director-in-training is Zak Hajjaoui, mentored by Timothy Antone. Head dancers are Lee Benson and Jonnie Shields. Host drum is Poplar Singers, with co-host drum Smoketrail Singers.

Donations of cash or non-perishable food items will be accepted for the Georgian College Student Food Locker.
