Electrical Engineering Technology Program Re-accredited

Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC) celebrated the historic accreditation renewal of Georgian’s Electrical Engineering Technology program with students, staff and faculty at the Barrie Campus on Jan. 17. The program was the first to be accredited by TAC.

National program accreditation involves a comprehensive audit, including interviews with employers of graduates, alumni, students and faculty and a tour of the program’s facilities.

“We congratulate Georgian College and the Electrical Engineering Technology program on the first ever accreditation renewal in TAC’s history,” remarked Richard Stamper, TAC Executive Director. “This significant achievement demonstrates the College’s continued leadership and commitment to its students and signifies that the program aligns with the current standards of the profession, which are valued by industry.”

The audit team noted the program boasts a high degree of student satisfaction, as well as, postgraduate student success, attributable to the broad spectrum of industry-academia partnerships, modern classrooms and laboratory facilities which reflect the current state of industry technologies and a co-op mandatory component. Additionally, the Program Advisory Committee contributes a high level of involvement in the program, providing up to date knowledge around current industry technologies and market conditions.

“We are very proud of the ongoing hard work and commitment our faculty and staff dedicate toward getting our programs accredited,” said Dr. Bill Angelakos, Dean, Technology and Visual Arts, Georgian College. “Accreditation by valued institutions, such as TAC, is one component of our quality control measures for ensuring our programs continue to meet the needs of industry and the local community. Accreditation further emphasizes that our graduates leave Georgian with networks, hard skills, work experience and strong resumés that give them an unrivaled advantage in launching their careers.”

Additionally, accreditation provides an expedited path to professional certification through Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technician and Technologists and other provincial engineering technology and applied science certifying bodies across Canada.

Mark Gatenby, a professor in Georgian’s Engineering Technology program said a lot of effort went into the re-accreditation process. “I especially want to recognize the hard work of our Academic Program Assistant Jacqueline Huggard and all our faculty who were instrumental in achieving this accreditation.”
