Dual credit program a great introduction to college

As the secondary school year comes to a close, many high school students are finishing classes at Georgian College. About 1,100 students from eight school boards take college credits that count toward their high school diplomas at Georgian each year.

Girl with long dark hair standing in front of a displayJessica Gauvin is one such student. When she started the 2017-18 academic year, her guidance counsellor at St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School told the Grade 12 student she was missing several credits and would not be able to graduate with her peers. To catch up, she decided to take an Introduction to Psychology dual credit course.

“I thought it would be a good idea,“ Jessica says. “It’s also a plus that psychology interests me so the class was a perfect idea. Since I started dual credit, I’ve noticed that I enjoy the college environment a lot more than high school. It’s also really motivating me to go to college and start planning my future.”

Jessica hopes to join the School within a College program at the Barrie Campus in the fall. In that program, students attend the college while taking both secondary and college credits.

There are seven School within a College classes on four Georgian campuses this semester. This month, each will hold a celebration or graduation at Georgian to mark the successful end to the academic year. Many of those students become Georgian students and Jessica hopes to be one of them a year from now.
