Days of significance: July 2025

Equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging (EDI&B) is a strategic priority at Georgian. We’re dedicated to fostering a learning and working environment where everyone feels seen, heard and knows they belong through demonstrable, accountable and system-wide commitments to diversity, de-colonization, anti-racism, equity and inclusion. This days of significance calendar lists the days and months that are recognized within the Georgian community.

There are several dates each month that are recognized, observed and celebrated across Canada and internationally, and we encourage everyone to self-educate by referring to these great resources:

July 1 – Canada Day

Canada Day holds different meanings for different people. While it can be a time to reflect on shared values and aspirations, it’s also important to acknowledge the complex and painful history many Indigenous people have experienced.

All Georgian campuses will be closed on July 1.

July 14 – International Non-Binary People’s Day

On July 14, Georgian proudly celebrates International Non-Binary People’s Day. It’s a time to recognize the diversity, strength and contributions of nonbinary people within our college and community.

We’re committed to creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels respected, supported and a true sense of belonging. One way we can support nonbinary people is by learning more about gender diversity, listening to lived experiences with openness, using inclusive language and pronouns and advocating for policies that reflect and affirm people’s identities. Speaking up when we witness exclusion or discrimination also helps create a more inclusive and caring community.

What does nonbinary mean?
Nonbinary is a term used by people whose gender identity does not fit within the traditional categories of man or woman. While gender has often been viewed as binary – either male or female – nonbinary identities reflect a broader and more inclusive understanding of gender.

Nonbinary people may identify as both male and female, neither or something entirely different. Some experience their gender as fluid and changing over time, while others have a consistent identity that exists outside the binary. People may use terms like agender, genderqueer, genderfluid or gender nonconforming to describe their experiences. The term Two Spirit, which is specific to Indigenous Peoples, is also part of the nonbinary umbrella.

July 24 – International Self-care Day

International Self-care day raises awareness about the importance of self-care and its role in a healthy lifestyle. The day encourages individuals to focus on their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being by engaging in activities that promote self-care.

Self-care has been known to have a multitude of benefits, such as:

  • reduce anxiety and depression,
  • improve concentration and focus,
  • improve energy and motivation, and
  • reduce risk of heart disease and stroke.
