Contribute to the carnage: Kill paper coffee cups and win
Oct. 12, 2016
The problem:
- Georgian campuses use more than three million disposable coffee cups a year.
- The Barrie Campus alone uses 6,600 cups a day.
- Paper cups are clogging our waste disposal bins and lowering our landfill diversion rates.
- Because of their waterproof lining, paper cups are not recyclable. In fact, if you throw your cup in a recycling bin, the entire contents of that bin are contaminated and end up in a landfill.
- Learn more about the paper cup problem in this Toronto Star article.
The solution:
- Bring a reusable mug to campus every day. You’ll save 10 cents on your campus beverage!
- Post a selfie with your reusable mug and the hashtag #GCKilltheCup on Twitter, Instagram or Georgian’s Facebook page between Oct. 12 and 21 for a chance to win one of these great prizes:
- A $100 gift card for Georgian Stores
- A GCSA prize pack (including Georgian spirit wear)
- Lunch for four at the Georgian Dining Room
- Two lunch buffets for two at the Kempenfelt Conference Centre
- A Verbatim Power Pack
- Eight Georgian Grizzlies gift bags
- Reusable mugs from the TLC
- Coca Cola t-shirts and caps
- And more!
- If you DO buy a paper cup, recycle your lid (plastics) and sleeve (paper) – and put the cup itself in the garbage.
The sustainability committee would like to thank all our generous prize sponsors: The Lass Class and The First Class, Kempenfelt Conference Centre, Georgian’s Health and Wellness clinics, the Georgian Dining Room, the Athletics department, the GCSA and Georgian Stores.
