Community members spearhead fundraising campaigns in support of Georgian students

A single mom struggling to raise two kids. An aspiring entrepreneur with an idea but needing some support and skills.

These are the individuals Giselle Bodkin and Chris Adams were thinking of when they launched WOMEN’s inTUITION and Fund 50 at Georgian.

WOMEN’s inTUITION supports a scholarship fund to assist female students in financial need.

Bodkin, a member of Georgian’s Advancement Committee and champion of postsecondary education, was inspired to create the initiative after attending a Women Moving Women event – a national movement to change the face of poverty in Canada.

She made her donation in honour of her late sister-in-law, Leanne Kavanagh, who studied Nursing part-time at Georgian.

WOMEN’s inTUITION donors give $50 a month for five years.

Fund 50 supports burgeoning entrepreneurs through Georgian’s Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre (HBEC). Adams hopes to inspire 50 entrepreneurial business professionals to contribute $50 per month for 50 months.

He launched the campaign last year in collaboration with Jessica Larche and in celebration of the college’s 50th anniversary.

“Our goal is to foster bright, entrepreneurial minds,” he says. “The funds support both student and community-based startups through events, pitch competitions, awards and speakers organized through HBEC.”

In recognition of his initiative on this campaign and his heavy involvement with HBEC, Adams received a 2018 Board of Governors’ Community Partner Award.
