Police Governance

Course description

In this course, students are presented with an overview of the different governance systems for policing in Canada including the RCMP, provincial police, and municipal police organizations. Police independence of national, provincial and municipal governments are discussed in detail including the various national, provincial and local inquiries conducted into police and civilian governance of policing. Four different models of police-government relations are discussed in detail. Various sections of the RCMP Act, and the Ontario Police Services Act and its regulations are discussed as it relates to police accountability and police/civilian governance. Various police discipline cases relating to police accountability and oversight are also discussed.

Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
