Course description
Students learn and practice skills to assess the physical needs of people with developmental disabilities including the provision of personal hygiene, assisting with eating, assessing vital signs, changing simple dressings, safe lifting and transferring. Students discuss supervising self-care for supported individuals with an emphasis on respecting dignity, privacy and cultural practices. Through discussion, students learn about infection control and prevention, health and safety, and fire procedures as well as the importance of reporting and responding to accidents and emergencies. Planning and preparing balanced meals to meet nutritional guidelines, cultural and personal preferences are practiced. Throughout the course, students explore the need to collaborate with health care and allied professionals to provide appropriate health services and supports

Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
