Course description

Students engage in hands-on learning experiences in the education or community setting, practicing core principles of relational practice and professional competencies. Throughout the placement, students will actively apply theoretical knowledge of child and youth development, engaging with children and youth in ways that promote trust, respect, and meaningful connection. Students will focus on strength-based approaches while assessing individual and community assets, fostering resilience, and empowering clients to recognize and build upon their unique capabilities. Students are supported and encouraged to uphold the highest standards of professional conduct, adhering to confidentiality requirements and demonstrating respect for diversity, inclusion, and equity. Structured supervision, led by experienced professionals, engages students in ongoing mentorship, enabling them to reflect on their experiences, integrate feedback, and refine their professional identity. Effective and collaborative communication is woven throughout all placement aspects, ensuring students learn to share information, listen actively, and work constructively within multidisciplinary teams. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the competencies required for professional child and youth care work, preparing them for ethical, strength-based, and relationally grounded practice in their future careers

Prerequisites

(Post Secondary level CYWK 1007 CYC Practice Minimum Grade of 50
or Apprentice level CYAO 1001 Intro to Child and Youth Work Minimum Grade of 50)
and Post Secondary level HUMN 1008 Success in Human Services Minimum Grade of 50

Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
