Exhibition Design

MUSM 1003

Course description

In this course, students receive hands-on experience planning, designing, and installing a variety of exhibitions that take place over the two semesters of the program. Students learn how the elements and principles of design are integrated into a range of design solutions and presentation strategies that affect the visitor experience. Careful consideration is given to the dynamics between the objects, the institution, and the audience. Students consider the challenges and opportunities for museums and galleries today through studio work, discussions, and projects. They use a variety of design software in the arrangement and production of exhibition spaces and support materials and develop exhibition models that integrate design concepts to create user-friendly spaces that are inclusive of a variety of audiences, including considering the need for physical and intellectual accessibility into exhibition designs. Environmentally sustainable materials and waste reduction practices are also introduced
