Message from the Chair
Greetings fellow Grizzlies,
I am writing to you, as part of our newly designed monthly e-newsletter for Georgian alumni, and as my last official message as your chair of the Georgian College Alumni Association Executive Council.
As an alumnus, I could not be prouder of our college’s outstanding accomplishments. From growth and diversification in our student population and depth of programming, to the amazing new spaces defining the learning environment on our seven campuses, Georgian is leading the way.
Know that I am grateful to each of you for the opportunity to serve Georgian and to advocate and grow our association. As your chair, it has been my goal to work with the college’s advancement and alumni relations team, alongside the council to raise awareness about the amazing achievements and success of our global alumni community. We have worked hard to launch new programs and services, support Georgian in its growth, and deepen the connections between current and future alumni.
For instance, to ensure our alumni community is connected whenever and wherever, we launched the exclusive Georgian Alumni Network. Our alumni association was one of the first Canadian colleges to introduce such a tool and provide Georgian grads with a cutting-edge virtual environment to connect, learn and engage. The Georgian Alumni Network was built for us – so ensure you take advantage of it. There is information in the newsletter about signing up.
I complete my term as chair during a challenging and unprecedented period. COVID-19 has impacted nearly every facet of our daily lives, and that of our families, friends and colleagues. Georgian has pivoted in response to the pandemic in a remarkable way, classes and services moved to remote delivery with strong success, and the entire college operation moved to a working from home environment. Our alumni relations team has continued its work on our behalf without pause, and in many regards, have expanded alumni program offerings and services, including newly designed alumni communications, access to free continuing education resources, launching a new virtual speaker series, as well as leading the organization of Georgian’s first-ever virtual celebration for the class of 2020.
In the face of all this disruption, and in true Georgian fashion, we are demonstrating our resilience as a community, united by our lifelong bond with our alma mater. I am continually inspired and uplifted by the many stories of alumni perseverance, innovation, kindness and leadership that appear in my inbox and on the Georgian Alumni Network and social media channels. We know that so many of our fellow graduates are working on the frontlines right now, keeping us safe and healthy. Whether working in health, public safety, childcare, retail, social services, transit, etc., Georgian alumni are helping ensure our communities are strong and protected. On behalf of the council, I extend a heartfelt thank you.
Before I close this message, I do want to acknowledge two important movements. First, last month was Pride month. While the Stonewall riots may have occurred in 1969, the fight for equality continues. As allies and friends, we stand proudly with our LGBTQ2I community. Second, the tragic events that occurred in May have been followed by a global movement of both grief and anger in way we have never seen before. The tragic loss of life in Minneapolis and elsewhere has touched all of us. Your Alumni Association is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all of us, to encouraging ongoing dialogue about racial injustice, and to ensuring that all voices are represented and heard. We stand in solidarity with those experiencing racism and affirm our commitment that we will not tolerate racism of any kind.
Looking to the future, your council welcomed a new executive team last month. Leading us into 2020 to 2021 is alumnus Arjun Batra (class of 2007). I can’t wait to see the great things that emerge from this dynamic and diverse executive team. In next month’s issue of The Loop, you will find information on the new council and greetings from our new chair. Finally, please join me in congratulating and thanking the following retiring council members for their outstanding work and impactful service on behalf of Georgian: Jeremy Wyant (class of 2008 and 2009), Owein Chivers (class of 2012) and Jake Vella (class of 2005). Thank you!
On behalf of myself, my partner Andrea who is also a proud Georgian grad (class of 2013) and our twin boys who arrived last year, we wish you happiness, good health and continued success in the days ahead.
Shaun McCracken (class of 2010)
