Course description

Students are provided an overview of the essential healing elements of therapeutic relationships, as well as the skills required to assist individuals to achieve goals related to wellness, leisure and quality of life. A primary focus is on the development of empathic communication skills including the art of listening, empathic understanding, and the nature of ambivalence as it effects motivation to grow, adapt and change. Students listen to client stories, identify their needs and apply empathic communication skills to convey understanding and to enhance motivation and goal acquisition.

Prerequisites


Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
