Police Powers

Course description

Students examine the legal foundations, scope, and limitations of police powers in Canada. Students explore investigative detention, arrest, search, seizure, use of force, and interim release authorities included in the Criminal Code. Students study the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and its impact on police procedure. Through case law analysis and practical scenarios, students apply legal principles. Students practice lawful arrests, and appropriate, legally sound techniques in handcuffing and search incident to arrest. Students discuss lawful decision making, procedural justice, codes of conduct, and accountability

Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
