Mental Health Challenges
Students are introduced to mental health as a spectrum with a focus on mental disorders and cognitive impairments. A holistic approach to providing care to clients and families within the role of the personal support worker is emphasized. Students examine mental health in Canada through historical, social and cultural lenses, discussing stigma associated with disorders and impairments and the rights of clients in relation to the Mental Health Act. Reflecting on lived experience of mental health across the spectrum, students explore strategies for self-care as a health professional, and develop an awareness of community resources.
