Course description
Students examine the roles and responsibilities of Indigenous, Municipal, Provincial, and Federal law enforcement officers. Topics include municipal bylaws, provincial offences and federal legislation such as the Criminal Code of Canada, the Indian Act and National Defence Act. Students develop practical skills in the preparation of court documentation, including the initiation of proceedings under Parts I, II, and III of the Provincial Offences Act, as well as powers of arrest and the application of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Emphasis is placed on Indigenous justice, including Gladue principles, and the legal frameworks that uphold the rights of Indigenous peoples and protect their access to justice

Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
