Did you know: Over 50% of all traffic comes from a search engine.

What pages do I have access to?

  3. There are 3 main areas of the page editor that we’ll highlight:
    1. Page content
    2. Featured image
    3. Yoast SEO

Page content:

  1. Pages are constructed of blocks, including the Page Header block and many others which you’ll learn about in the “Types of blocks” section of this guide.

Featured image: the image you want to appear when your page is shared over social media

  1. If you’ve just accessed the page and haven’t clicked within the page block content, you’ll see the Document Settings Sidebar on the right-hand side.
  1. Expand the “Featured image” content
  1. You will either see the current featured image assigned for this page, or you’ll see a blank area stating “Set featured image”
  1. To set a featured image when one doesn’t already exist, click “Set featured image”
  1. A new window titled “Featured image” will appear. You have two tabs to choose between:
  1. Media Library: Use an existing image in the Media Library. Browse existing images or use the search filter to narrow results. After selecting an image, click the “Set featured image” button in the bottom right corner
  1. Upload Files: You want to upload a new image from your computer to use as the featured image. Be sure to follow image guidelines and assign ALT text upon uploading
  1. To change the current featured image and assign a new one, click the “Replace Image” button underneath the current image
  1. A new window titled “Featured image” will appear. You have two tabs to choose between:

  1. Upload Files: You want to upload a new image from your computer to use as the featured image. Be sure to follow image guidelines and assign ALT text upon uploading
  1. When done, continue with any other edits to your page and then submit for approval.

Yoast SEO

  1. Focus keyphrase: The focus keyphrase is the search term you want your page to rank for. When people search for this phrase online (within GeorgianCollege.ca and within search engines, i.e. Google), it will help them find your page. You’ll want to ensure you use this keyphrase within your page content, too. Learn more about keywords and SEO.
  1. By default, no focus keyphrase will be included and must be added manually
  1. To add a focus keyphrase, scroll to the bottom of your page content and look for the “Yoast SEO” heading
  1. You will see a text box for “Focus keyphrase” that will be blank if no keyphrase has been added for the page, or it will include a keyphrase previously assigned for your page. Note: You may only assign one focus keyphrase per page
  1. To add or update the focus keyphrase, simply click within the text box and revise accordingly
  1. Remember to reference this keyphrase within your page content, too!
  1. When done, all you need to do is click away from the Yoast SEO section, finish any other edits and then submit your revision for approval
  1. Edit snippet: The snippet is the description (formally known as the meta description) you want to appear under your page in the search results (within GeorgianCollege.ca and within search engines, i.e. Google). Learn more about meta data and SEO.
  1. By default, the meta description will pull a handful of words from the beginning of your page content then truncate (meaning, it’ll show so many characters as it can fit, and then include a … at a certain point, cutting off the remainder of content). It’s important to give this section some thought and provide an enticing overview of your page to encourage users to click through and visit your page.
  1. To customize the meta description, scroll to the bottom of your page content and look for the “Yoast SEO” heading
  1. Under the “Snippet Preview” section, click the “Edit Snippet” button. This will expand the snippet content, including the meta description
  1. In the “Meta description” box, use the text box to customize your meta description
  1. You will see an orange bar underneath that moves as you begin to enter your text. You’ll want this to appear green, which indicates your meta description is long enough. If after it turns green, you continue to write and it reverts back to orange, this indicates your meta description is too long and you need to cut down on the content to ensure everything will be shown and avoid truncation
  1. When done, click the “Close snippet editor” button below the text box, continue with any other edits to your page and then submit for approval

Ready to make your page live?

When you are done editing and ready to submit your edits for approval, click the blue “Submit Revision” button toward the top-right corner of the page.
