Human Rights and Equity

LAWS 1019

Students explore a range of matters related to human rights, equity, and social justice in the field of community safety. Using a historical and contemporary lens, students examine how systems of inequality (including racism, colonialism, discrimination, and systemic bias) shape interactions between community safety institutions and the diverse communities they serve. Through critical analyses of sociological, legislative, and professional practices, students develop an understanding of their responsibilities to uphold human rights, engage in ethical decision-making, promote equitable treatment, safeguard justice, and support inclusive workplace environments and communities. Students center the lived experiences of individuals and communities facing systemic barriers to accessing community safety and justice. Students reflect to understand the ways in which their beliefs systems, biases, and behaviour can influence their professional practice
